This was a wonderful thriller with several standout features for me, chief among them the very easy-to-relate to and endearing hero, Charlie. Despite being quite good at his job, things just don’t work out for him. The best-laid plans turn sour. Clues end in dead ends. He runs into one roadblock in the case after another. He’s thwarted by the less-than-forthcoming characters he’s investigating and those connected with them. His misfortune is so outrageous I often didn’t know whether to cry or laugh and I found myself doing both at times. Charlie’s also weighed down by the baggage of his past. His own sister was kidnapped and has been missing for years. He knows better than to investigate these kinds of cases and yet one gets dropped in his lap that he can’t ignore. Now his inner demons are stalking him and standing in his way every bit as much as the characters surrounding him. And last but not least he’s looking to patch a relationship up in his life. Emotions run high throughout, for Charlie, and for the people he has to navigate to bring his case to a successful conclusion.

A lot of what I’ve described is par for the course with this genre, so much lies in the execution. The writer must stir the same ingredients more or less into the pot as everyone else, and work magic with them all the same. And for me at least, this author did.

I loved the characters. The multiple story lines worked without being confusing. Plenty of mystery and we'll thought out human relationships. I will be reading more from this author.
It took all my will power to finish this book. Terribly disjointed and down right boring for at least the first third of the book. Finished it and thought the mystery was poor
This book was an enjoyable read. I appreciated the storyline was not obvious. The characters were interesting. I really learned to love and appreciate Charlie. I was certainly rooting for some success to come his way. If you like a mystery with plot twists and a bit of romance, you will truly like this book.
I enjoyed the depressive detective and his personal mystery merging with his professional one. It's difficult to be specific with out being a spoiler! It was great read and enjoyed all the characters. You'll have to wait and see how it all works out, because it's not what you think...
Charlie Cameron has a hard job, he looks for missing people and hopes he can find them alive. The hardest thing is when the missing person is a child. The author takes readers not only into a mystery thriller, but into the life of Charlie Cameron and delves into Charlie's mind as he searches for missing, especially when the abducted is just a child. Follow along for a thrilling suspense.
I purchased his first book because it was cheap and I had not read this author before. So if I didn't like him I had not wasted my money. I did struggle to remain interested because the pace at first was slow. However I stuck with it and was glad I did. A good interesting read with developed characters. I went on to purchase all three books. An underrated writer and certainly undervalued (monetary wise) considering some of the rubbish more fancied writers publish.
Games People Play is a solid debut novel by British author Owen Mullen. It was good enough that I immediately ran to and purchased book 2 when I finished.

The tale is basically about the disappearance of a little girl in broad daylight and the myriad of repercussions that follow. I have to admit it took me about a third of the novel to be totally drawn in, but it was worth it to get to what came after. This book features the infrequent combination of a first-rate crime plot plus excellent characterization. We get a good look at the far-reaching effects of “an innocent affair” and how adversely the lives of “innocent bystanders” can be impacted. We are mainly privy to the thoughts of Charlie Cameron, a private investigator with a traumatic past; but we also get a peek at the “rationale” of the abductor. We see the extreme pressure the police are under to crack the case and the repercussions on the psyche and personal life of one cop in particular. Other interesting players include a local rock star (Kate), a bar manager (Jackie), a former cop stricken with cancer (Ronnie), Charlie’s alcoholic assistant (Patrick), and a guy named Richard Hill.

I thought I had the identity of the abductor all figured out, but I was bamboozled at the end. I’m not sure the clues are strong enough for me to have had any chance of guessing the abductor’s identity, but perhaps some smarter reader might do so. I did love the myriad of surprises scattered throughout and the side plots.

All in all, I was favorably impressed by Mr. Mullen’s first novel, and I definitely plan to continue on with the series. Highly recommended.
