Sandra Neeley has proven time and again her command of the paranormal. She makes the unbelievable believable. Whispers is a world unlike any other. In some ways, it mirrors the human world. There’s infinite diversity. Magic and the supernatural permeate the very air. But in this world, good and evil, light and dark, hatred, jealousy, all-consuming love, and joy exist side-by-side. I can’t begin to fathom how Ms. Neeley created this world. All I know is I love it. I’m captivated by it, to the point where the real world ceased to exist, so immersed in the magic that nothing else mattered. Gargoyles, witches, vampires, Ancients, merpeople, dragons…can they be real? Ms. Neeley makes you believe. Your mind tells you these are creatures of legend who can’t exist. Your heart tells something completely different. Ms. Neeley transforms them, makes you see who and what they truly are. It’s more proof of her incredible talent. Destroy is so full of himself. In many ways, he’s comical. But is this real or just a façade? Destroy is so much more than he appears. Rowan’s power terrifies her. She denies her very soul in a misguided attempt to protect others. Yet she too has unplumbed depths. These two have only the tiniest of connections. This story shouldn’t work. Yet the smallest sparks are fanned into flames that consume you entirely. Add the wealth of supporting characters, the beauty of the Louisiana bayou, the emotions Ms. Neeley evokes, and you have an enchanting treasure! Congratulations, Ms. Neeley! I adored this book! Destroy deserves so much more than five stars!

Note the main character is Roma, and does have magical powers. Some may be offended by this, as it reinforces the stereotype of Roma people being mystical and dangerous, etc. But I also felt that this story did not "Other" her in any way, especially since the story is supernatural in nature, and this world isn't exactly a stranger to magic.

This story, much like its predecessor, is utterly delightful. The characters are all incredibly endearing, even when they are being obnoxious meatheads. This was a community and a safe haven for supernatural beings. Though they were a community, there was never much interaction between them, each feeling isolated and lonely. But this changes when Carolena, a human, comes to be a part of their community. She shows them joy, kindness, and friendship. Her nature not only brings them close to her, but brings them closer to each other.

Despite there being a lot of horrifying events in the story, there are many moments where you can't help but smile. Carnage, though still emotional and stubborn, as really come out of his shell and is more animated. Images of him imitating a chicken for his daughter's own amusement will never cease to make me giggle. And insightful but still fully childlike Lily maintains a great balance of being wise beyond her years while still being not much older than a toddler. And she has the most feared being wrapped around her finger. And she makes them look gorgeous with her make-up jobs and ribbons! The scenes and character are written in a way that you feel their joy, and can't help but being happy for them.

We see Destroy's character grow as his love for Rowan evolves into something deeper. Though still arrogant and goofy, he, without realizing it, slowly becomes more and more of a responsible being, and less and less self centered. He begins to see the need of others and steps up to be the person they need him to be. And while Rowan is being hunted by enemies in the human and supernatural world, it is not a story of the white knight coming to save the day, but rather a group effort of friends and family who care for each other looking out for each other.

Rowan's character is one who carries a great deal of guilt for tragedies she could not help, which have just lead to more hardship for her family. But she sticks close to her morals and ideals. In the end, her story is not one of a woman who is cured and fulfilled by a relationship with a man. She has a purpose in life and goals to make the world a better place for marginalized women. Her work and passion exist outside her relationship with Destroy, but does not take away from it. A very healthy relationship!
I really like Sandra Neeley’s romance stories. A little dark but with great, caring, sweet to their women, anti-hero characters. Destroy was good, just not great. I’m glad I read it and it continued the Louisiana Bayou monsters. Destroy was a little too boyish for a big bad gargoyle. A little too innocent maybe but it kind of fit his character so not sure why I’m complaining. The sex was kind of ok and not enough of it...doesn’t really happen until near the very end. Still, worth a read to stay in the unique world that Sandra created.
